The MANPADS Threat

MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defense System) are considered one of the main threats to military, VIP and commercial aircraft.

MANPADS are inexpensive and widely proliferated – it is estimated that over 200,000 missiles are in the hands of militants and non-state organizations. The missiles are easy to conceal and operate and are especially dangerous for take-off and landing and for low altitude flights. Airfields have known locations and defined flight paths that make fatal MANPAD attacks easy to plan and execute. Advanced MANPADS have been used by terrorist organizations in Asia, Africa, Middle East and South America.

The lethality of a MANPADS attack is 70-80% which means that when a missile is fired at an aircraft there is a 70-80% chance that the aircraft will crash.
